The latest iPhone 15 series, which took the tech world by storm last month, has come under scrutiny following numerous complaints about the devices overheating. Addressing the widespread concerns, Apple recently announced a software update aimed at resolving the issue.

The iPhone 15, just over a week since its launch, is facing unexpected challenges. From Reddit to Apple’s forums and various social media platforms, users have been vocal about their devices running abnormally hot. Some users went as far as saying that their iPhone 15 became too warm to hold during phone calls.
Root of the Problem
In a statement to Forbes, Apple acknowledged the reports of the iPhone 15 devices overheating. Apple clarified that it is typical for iPhones to run warmer during the initial days due to increased background activities, such as system setup and restoring processes.
However, a bug in iOS 17 is one of the culprits causing the overheating in the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro, Apple disclosed. The company also emphasized that the overheating issue is further exacerbated by some recent updates to third-party apps, including popular ones like Instagram, Uber, and the iOS game Asphalt 9.
Instagram seems to be the first to take corrective measures, with its latest update on September 27 addressing the overheating issues. Apple is in discussions with other app developers to expedite their respective fixes.
Hardware Not At Fault
Despite speculations from industry experts, such as longtime Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the titanium design of the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max is not responsible for the overheating. Apple reassured users that the titanium design actually aids better heat dissipation, thanks to its new internal aluminium substructure.
Apple went on to refute claims that an update might reduce the iPhone 15’s performance to counteract the overheating. The upcoming iOS 17.1, which is currently in beta, will fix the bug causing overheating without compromising on performance.
Additionally, Apple issued a recommendation to users regarding charging. Given the iPhone 15’s transition to USB-C, users should exercise caution when selecting power adapters. Apple stated that using chargers with more than 20W could cause the phone to heat up temporarily during charging.

While there’s no confirmed release date for the software update expected to address these concerns, Apple’s track record suggests it will be sooner rather than later.
Despite these challenges, the iPhone 15 continues to see robust sales. Long queues were reported at Apple stores on launch day, and shipping times for the devices have extended for weeks, suggesting the iPhone 15 series remains in high demand.
